AutoMod

Manage Discord's AutoMod from the dashboard, with templates, regex patterns and a message tester.

Overview#

Discord has a built-in moderator called AutoMod. It checks every message before anyone sees it, and can block it, alert your staff or time out the sender. Strelitzia lets you manage those rules from the dashboard, and adds things Discord's own settings don't have:

  • Templates for common jobs: server invites, scam links, zalgo text, phone numbers, mass mentions and more
  • A regex pattern editor that checks each pattern as you type
  • A "catch misspellings" helper that turns a word into a pattern that also catches 5c@m, scaaam and s.c.a.m
  • A tester: type a message and see whether the rule would catch it, and why

Your rules live in Discord, not in Strelitzia. They work even if Strelitzia is offline, changes apply right away, and rules made in Server Settings > AutoMod show up in the dashboard too.

AutoMod may not be available on every server yet. See Beta Features if you cannot find it in your dashboard.

How to Set Up#

  1. Go to the dashboard and select your server
  2. Navigate to the AutoMod section
  3. Pick a template, or click a rule type under Add a rule to start from scratch
  4. Fill in what to match, choose what happens when it matches, and add any exempt roles or channels
  5. Click Add rule

On a server with no Strelitzia rules yet, the AutoMod page offers a Recommended setup: server invites, scam and phishing links, mass mentions and Discord's spam filter, added in one click. Untick any you don't want, and optionally pick a channel for alerts. Each one is an ordinary rule afterwards that you can edit or remove.

Rule Types#

TypeWhat it matchesPer server
Keywords & regexWords, phrases and patterns in messages6
Word listsDiscord's own lists of severe profanity, sexual content, and insults and slurs1
SpamMessages Discord's spam detection flags1
Mention spamMessages that mention more than a set number of people and roles (up to 50)1
Member profilesMember names and profiles that match keywords or patterns1

A rule's type can't be changed after it's made. Make a new rule instead.

Keywords#

One keyword per line, up to 1,000 per rule. Letter case is ignored. A * at the start or end changes how a keyword matches:

KeywordMatches
catThe whole word only: "cat", but not "concatenate"
cat*Words starting with it: "catalog"
*catWords ending with it: "bobcat"
*cat*Anywhere: "concatenate"

Regex Patterns#

Up to 10 patterns per rule, each up to 260 characters. Discord runs them with Rust's regex engine, which means:

  • No lookahead, lookbehind or backreferences. The dashboard flags these before you save.
  • Start a pattern with (?i) to ignore letter case.

The Catch misspellings box under the patterns builds one for you: type a word and it adds a pattern that also matches look-alike characters, repeated letters and separators between letters.

Allowed Words#

Words that should never trigger the rule, even when a keyword or pattern matches. For example, a link-blocking rule might allow youtube.com and tenor.com.

Actions#

ActionWhat it doesAvailable on
Block the messageThe message is never posted. You can add a short note the member seesEverything except member profiles
Send an alertPosts what was caught to a staff channel you pickEvery type
Time out the memberTimes them out, from 1 minute to 4 weeksKeywords & regex, and mention spam
Block chattingThe member can't chat until they fix their profileMember profiles

Testing a Rule#

Keyword rules have a Test it box. Type a message and the dashboard shows whether the rule would catch it, which keyword or pattern matched, and whether an allowed word let it through. The test runs in your browser, so treat it as a close guide rather than a guarantee.

Who AutoMod Ignores#

Members with Manage Server or Administrator are never affected. You can also exempt up to 20 roles and 50 channels (or whole categories) per rule.

Permissions#

Strelitzia needs Manage Server to manage AutoMod rules, and Timeout Members for rules that time members out. The dashboard warns you if either is missing.

Activity#

The Activity tab shows every message AutoMod caught today, or in the last 7 or 30 days:

  • Totals: how many hits, how many members, and how many escalations
  • Hits per day
  • Which rules catch the most, and which members get caught the most
  • A list of recent hits with the member, rule, channel and what matched. Click a member or a rule to see only theirs

Hits are kept for 30 days. Text caught in age-restricted channels isn't stored.

Escalation#

Discord's AutoMod treats every message on its own. Escalation steps in when the same member keeps getting caught. On the Escalation tab:

  1. Choose a time window, for example 1 hour
  2. Add up to 5 steps, each with a number of hits and what happens: Warn, Time out (5 minutes to 1 week) or Kick
  3. Turn escalation on

For example, warn at 3 hits and time out for 1 hour at 5 hits, within 1 hour. Every caught message counts as one hit, whichever rule caught it. Each step happens once, when a member reaches exactly that many hits. Warnings appear on the Warnings page like any other.

Turn on Tell the member to DM them what happened and why. Each escalation is also posted to your AutoMod log, if you have one.

Timeouts need Strelitzia to have Timeout Members, and kicks need Kick Members, with its role above the member's. If it can't act, the hit is marked "Couldn't time out" or "Couldn't kick" in the Activity list.

Logging#

To get a log entry whenever a rule is created, changed, or catches someone, turn on the AutoMod category in Logging.
