Starboard
Repost messages that get enough reactions to a channel of their own.
Overview#
A starboard is a channel where your server's best messages end up. When a message gets enough reactions of the emoji you pick, Strelitzia reposts it there, with the author, the content, the reaction count and a link back to the original. Images and videos are copied into a gallery and other files are attached below it, up to 10 files and 25 MB per repost, within your server's upload limit. Anything that doesn't fit is listed by name. The author is mentioned on the repost and gets one ping when their message is first featured; later updates don't ping. The count on the repost keeps up as people react.
You can run more than one starboard, each with its own channel, emoji and rules: a classic ⭐ board for everything, and a 😂 board only for your memes channel, for example.
Starboard may not be available on every server yet. See Beta Features if you cannot find it in your dashboard.
How to Set Up#
- Go to the dashboard and select your server
- Navigate to the Starboard section and click Set up a starboard
- Choose the channel reposts go to, or pick New channel and Strelitzia makes one
- Pick the emoji (any standard emoji or one of your server's own) and how many reactions it takes
- Optionally limit which channels and which members' messages count
- Click Add starboard: it's live within about a minute
Changes you make later, including turning a starboard on or off, also reach the bot within about a minute.
What Gets Reposted#
A message is reposted once it has at least the chosen number of the chosen reaction. After that:
- More reactions update the count on the repost
- Deleting the original deletes the repost too
- Falling below the count removes the repost, unless you turn that option off
- Each message is reposted once per starboard, never twice
Messages That Are Never Reposted#
Some messages are skipped even with enough reactions. If a message isn't showing up, it's usually one of these:
- Age-restricted channels. Messages from an age-restricted channel are only reposted to a starboard channel that is age-restricted too.
- Private channels. If some members who can see the starboard can't see the channel a message came from, it isn't reposted, so a starboard never leaks a private channel to a wider audience. This counts roles and members added by name: if one member is blocked from a channel and can still see the starboard, that channel's messages aren't reposted either. To repost them anyway, remove that member's override on the channel and use a role instead, or hide the starboard from them too.
- Members who opted out. Anyone can turn starboards off for their own messages (see below).
- The starboard channel itself. Messages already on the starboard don't count.
- Your filters. Channels and roles you've included or excluded.
- Old messages. If the starboard has a maximum age, older messages aren't newly reposted. Reposts already up keep counting.
- Messages a moderator removed. See below.
Media that Discord's content scanning flags as explicit, gore or self-harm is never copied to a starboard. The message is still reposted with its text and a Media hidden note. If Discord flags the media after the repost is up, Strelitzia removes the media from the repost.
Removing a Message#
Moderators can take a message off the starboard: right-click it (on a phone, long-press it), then choose Apps > Remove from starboard. It works on the original or on the repost. The repost is deleted from every starboard, and the message won't be reposted again, however many reactions it gets.
To undo it, use the Allow it again button in the reply. The message is reposted as soon as it has enough reactions.
Members with Manage Messages, or Manage access to Starboard under Access Control, can use it.
Leaderboard#
Anyone can run /starboard top to see the server's most-starred messages. Add by: Members to rank members by the stars their reposted messages collected, and starboard: to look at one starboard only. Mentions in the leaderboard never ping anyone.
The same leaderboard is on the Starboard page of the dashboard, under your starboards, with a link to each message. Anyone with view access to Starboard can see it.
Configuration Options#
| Setting | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | Only shown in the dashboard, to tell your starboards apart |
| Repost to | The channel reposts are posted in. Each channel can hold one starboard. Choose New channel to have Strelitzia make a text channel (optionally in a category) when you save; this needs Manage Channels |
| Emoji | The reaction that counts. A standard emoji or one of your server's custom emojis |
| Count | How many reactions a message needs, from 1 to 100 |
| Authors' own reactions count | Off by default: an author reacting to their own message doesn't add to the count |
| Remove if it drops below the count | On by default: the repost is removed if reactions fall under the count again |
| Ignore messages older than | In days (1 to 365). Older messages are never newly reposted. Leave empty for no limit |
| Only these channels | Watch only these channels. Leave empty to watch every channel |
| Never these channels | Channels that never feed the starboard |
| Only authors with these roles | Repost only messages from members with one of these roles |
| Never authors with these roles | Never repost messages from members with these roles |
| Enabled | Turn a starboard off without deleting its settings |
Role filters apply to the person who wrote the message, not to the people reacting.
Opting Out#
Any member can stop their messages from being reposted, in every server at once: open Settings in the dashboard and turn on Don't repost my messages. Turning it on also removes their messages that were already reposted, within about a minute.
Permissions#
Strelitzia needs View Channel, Send Messages, Embed Links, Attach Files and Read Message History in the starboard channel, and View Channel and Read Message History in the channels it watches. The dashboard warns you if any are missing, both server-wide and in the starboard channel you pick (including that channel's own permission settings). Making a New channel also needs Manage Channels.
Plan Limits#
Free servers can have one starboard. Your server's usage is shown in Server settings.
Tips#
- Start with a count of 3 to 5 for a small server, higher for a busy one. If the starboard fills up too fast, raise it.
- Keep the starboard channel read-only for members, so it stays a highlight reel and not another chat.
- Exclude your staff and bot channels so private discussions and command spam never show up.
- Use a second starboard with a different emoji for a different kind of message, like 😂 for memes or 🎨 for art.
